May's Speaker Bio:

"A Year in the Life of a Fly Fisher" by Rich Lobrovich

Rich Lobrovich started Fly Fishing in 1977. While living in Ogden Utah, an Air Force friend offered to wrap a graphite fly rod. The rod was a 7 foot, 4 weight, 2 piece full flex he used to present small flies to Cutthroat Trout living in Beaver Ponds in Utah's Wasatch Front Mountains. Rich moved back to Santa Cruz California in 1978 and was the founding Treasurer of the Santa Cruz Fly Fishers. Over the next ten years Rich traveled to many locations across the United States in search of Wild and Native trout. In 1988 Rich joined the Livermore Fly Fishers and became the Program chair and a board member of the Northern California Council Federation of Fly Fishers (NCCFFF). In 1990 Rich was elected President of the Livermore Fly Fishers. Over the next 20 years Rich has been active and inactive as a board member of the NCCFFF. Three years as the Program Chair of the NCCFFF Conclaves in Lake Tahoe.

In 1997 Rich and Corey Cate made plans to start a new club the "Tracy Fly Fishers." The process was to teach a class on Intro to Fly Fishing at the local Park and Rec Department. Two classes were scheduled in Sept of 1997, in which 16 students learned a new sport of Fly Fishing. Then contact was made with the local access TV station and ran an ad from September thought December. Both of these ideas generated phone calls and e-mails from lots of folks from around the Tracy area. The next step was to have both newspapers take photos of our casting and write a story about the New Club in Town. So in early Dec of 1997 Rich and Corey planned an Organizational meeting. About 30 people showed up and 15 became charter members of the newly formed "Tracy Fly Fishers." Rich was elected as the Founding President. Later that afternoon Corey launched the website, www.tracyflyfishers.org. This website was one of the first in Northern California in the fly fishing community. Our first meeting was held the third Wednesday of Jan 1998 and was a big success. We signed up 45 new members that night for a total of 60 members. From the beginning we have focused on folks young and old who were new to the sport.

Rich has also been a member of the Mission Peak Fly Anglers of Fremont and is the current Program Chair. Rich joined Orvis San Jose in Aug of 2007.

Rich restarted fly tying when the Tracy club was launched. One morning while along the Clark Fork he started tying a Bead Head fly with a mix of dubbing. Since he was wearing a tie dyed shirt the fly was named the "Dead Head Bead Head". Later that morning the first test fly worked and landed many fish. In fact in worked so well that this same fly caught fish the next day as well. When the fly was lost to the rocks below it had landed 32 trout. Not bad for a test fly.

Rich has tied flies at the following events:

About 8 years ago Rich started fishing for Large Mouth Bass, Surf Perch and Stripers. In the Spring of 2006 he did a road trip to West Texas to fish for The Guadalupe Small Mouth, what a Blast!

Rich’s current program "A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF A FLY FISHER" was developed to answer the question Where do you go fishing? And When is fishing season? His program covers many species’ and many locations. The program starts off on Jan 1 and goes through Dec 31.

A few story’s Rich has written.
