On 1/15 - 1/18 Ray Mutter and I, along with 10 friends, fished out of Casa Mar Lodge in Costa Rica. Our main quarry was tarpon, but we also hoped to catch snook and machaca, a fish that looks like a large mouth bass with teeth like a ling cod. Unfortunately heavy rains and then wind limited our options, so tarpon was our only success, but they really made the trip.
Of the 12 of us we landed 24 tarpon, with each of us landing at least one.(We had many more hookups.) They ranged in size from 75 - 120 pounds. While those of us who are flyfishers caught our fish on flies, it was by trolling rather than casting due to the rain and wind.
It was a reasonably priced trip with the lodge furnishing all the equipment. Fishing was from Mexican style super pangas. For more information, see Ray or myself at a future meeting.
The following are some pictures that Don Mittelstaedt and Ray Mutter took on their trip to Costa Rica in January of 2006.
