Outings

2012 Arroyo Seco Outing

This months Amador Flyfishers Outing consisted of 2 separate days of fishing. Due to a great turnout of nine flyfishers on Wednesday, April 18 and another four that could not make that date, a second outing was held on Monday, April 23.

The first outing was met with mild temperatures and a blue sky with a mixture of clouds. Four of our fly fishers chose to fish at the smaller reservoir but found it to be as they said "muddy." They were joined by late – comer Tony Watley. Ray Mutter, Gary Slade, Tom Giacomini and Don Mittelstaedt joined us for lunch after having landed only a couple of fish.

March 2012 Indian Creek Reservoir Outing

Four members of the Amador Fly Fishers and one guest ventured up and over Carson Pass to fish Indian Creek Reservoir. With clear blue skies, fresh sparkling white snow and temperatures in the 20's, the drive was enjoyable without have to put on chains and or drive in 4 wheel drive.

Arrive before 9 am we were disappointed to find that the restrooms at the lake were all locked.  Those in need found a tree to take care of their present need!  Next came the unloading of the trucks, inflating of tubes, putting on waders, sunscreen and the stringing up of the poles.  Common conversation consisted of questions like "what is the report on the fishing?"  "What flies did they say were being used?"  "What type of line are you going to use?"  As fishmaster I had done my homework and had Googled some of the answers:  Fishing had been O.K. with some fish being taken, some as large as 18" inches; flies consisted of black and brown wooly buggers, and I recommended intermediate sinking lines.

This is a great outing to catch wild trout at one of California's best wild fisheries and to socialize with other members and guests. I suggest you make hotel reservations in Burney, CA.

There are two motels that I recommend and they are all under one ownership and phone number (530) 335-3300.

The Charm Motel: fee $166.00 plus tax per night. Sleeps seven.
Green Gables Motel: (I have booked unit 47 (sleeps 5 to 8) This is a first come first serve basis. The fee including tax is $152.90 per night & will be split by the nights you stay. Once you sign up and wish to cancel you will be responsible for the cost of the three nights or get a replacement.

The Main office for the two motels is located at 37371 Main Street, Burney Falls, CA 96013.

If you prefer to camp, there is McArthur Park at Lake Britton and near Burney Creek, Cassell PG&E Camp Ground. These are centrally located to most of the good fishing areas. There is also Hat Creek Hereford Ranch Campground (530) 335-7171 (great campground – showers, camp on grass – but not located as close to fishing).

I will be heading up on Monday, May 6, and returning on Thursday, May 9, 2013. I invite any who can make it to come that day or any day/part of the week. Members are encouraged to bring non-members on this expedition. If anyone needs a ride or would just like to pair up or can drive, contact me so I can try to pair you up.

We will meet Tuesday morning at 6:45 at the Green Gables Motel unit 47 and then head out to Hat Creek Power House #2. We will also be making trips to Burney Creek and Cassell or you may go to any other waters that you wish to fish (Pit River #3 & 4, Upper Hat Creek, Carbon Bridge).

Wednesday, the group will dine at Art's Out Post Restaurant, just down the street from the Burney Motel and across the street from the Green Gables Motel, to share information and fishing stories.

Gear: 5-6 Wt. Rods, floating line with a tapered leader, nymphs-flash back pt, Hares ear, Caddis, Copper John size 18-20. Dry: Caddis, Little yellow Stone, and the Salmon Fly may be out then.
